Shira Route

Shira Route Overview

The Shira Route is one of the less-traveled and scenic paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, offering breathtaking landscapes and a rewarding climbing experience. This route begins at the Shira Gate, located at an elevation of 3,600 meters above sea level, making it one of the highest starting points for Kilimanjaro climbs. The Shira Route traverses the expansive Shira Plateau, an ancient volcanic caldera, providing trekkers with stunning views of the surrounding landscapes, including unique flora and fauna. The route later merges with the Lemosho Route before continuing up the mountain.

Trekking Experience on the Shira Route

The Shira Route typically takes six to seven days to complete, depending on the chosen itinerary, allowing sufficient time for acclimatization. Trekkers experience a variety of ecosystems, from montane forests to heather and moorland zones, before reaching the alpine desert and the arctic summit zone. The trail is less crowded compared to popular routes like Marangu or Machame, offering a more serene and private trekking experience. Highlights of the Shira Route include panoramic views from the Shira Cathedral and the Lava Tower, as well as an opportunity to camp under the open skies on the Shira Plateau.

Suitability and Challenges

While the Shira Route offers an incredible experience, it requires good physical preparation and acclimatization due to its higher starting elevation. Trekkers may experience altitude sickness if they are not well-prepared or do not allow for proper acclimatization. The route is best suited for experienced hikers or adventurous first-timers with good fitness levels. To maximize safety and enjoyment, it is recommended to take the trek with professional guides and porters who are knowledgeable about the mountain and its challenges. Lazarino Tours & Safaris ensures clients have a well-organized and safe climb, focusing on client comfort, safety, and the unique beauty of the Shira Route.
